Design is playing an increasingly important role in security access equipment and good design doesn’t have to sacrifice function, as this issue’s “Beautiful and secure” story shows. Security hardware now embraces a wide variety of decorative collections with different finishes, colors and materials.  

The Göteborg Opera House is one place where security demands haven’t compromised building design. When it came time for an access control update, the Swedish opera house turned to ASSA ABLOY for assistance. We take a look at how one of the most technically advanced opera houses in the world copes with security challenges, including financing.

As long as there are security systems around, hackers will be attempting to break them and certainly no access system on the market today is immune to such activity. Security expert Mike Davis uses the Wiegand protocol as one example of a technology under attack and shares some best practices that will help alleviate the hacking threat.

Biometrics is more widespread than ever these days and it is making its way into airport applications around the globe. The busy Mexico City Airport has started using fingerprint matching on its more than 20,000 employees. Read all about it in this issue of the Future Lab.
